Instructions: Install BMW kidney grille with LED lighting yourself

More style for your BMW with an LED kidney grille!

In this video tutorial we show you step by step how you can give your BMW G30, G31 or G20 a modern upgrade with an LED-illuminated kidney grille.

This brings the 5 Series and 3 Series up to date visually, similar to current models such as the XNUMX Series, XNUMX Series and X models, which have an illuminated kidney grille as standard.

Why the LED kidney?

The new LED kidney grille gives the car a stylish look. However, it should only light up when the car is stationary, as the light is not allowed while driving in older models such as the G30 and G31. You will have to find out for yourself how to solve this in the software.

In this guide, you will learn how to install the kidney grille without any problems and which details you need to pay attention to. You should also be aware that this version is the one that lights up “always”. This means that it also lights up while driving. What is not the case with the G30/G31 legal at a hunt.

Steps to install the LED kidney

1. Preparation and Parts Overview

  • plug-and-play connector: Installation is comparatively easy, as the kidney grille has a practical plug-and-play connector that you can connect in the wheel arch.
  • software settings: The LED can be controlled via the software of your BMW so that it only lights up when stationary and thus complies with legal requirements. You have to do this using software. However, this is not provided by the kidney manufacturer.

2. Removing the wheel arch

  • To get to the plug, first remove the wheel house liner. Important: The wheel housing liner is fixed with around 10 screws and can be easily removed. This gives you access to the kidney connection and you can connect the plug. It might work without removing it, but I recommend it.

3. Connect the plug and test run

  • Once the plug is connected, you can test whether the kidney lights up. Open the car and check that the LEDs first light up blue and then white. Close the car to make sure the LEDs go out after about 30 seconds - this means everything is connected correctly.

4. Remove kidneys, cable routing in the engine compartment

  • You have to remove the old kidneys. The following video shows how to do this.

  • The cables are laid in the engine compartment in such a way that they are neither Water are still exposed to high temperatures. To do this, run the cables along the outer areas of the engine compartment (in the area of the cooling flaps for the kidneys) and use cable ties for secure fixation. Optionally, you can drill small holes in the plastic of the engine compartment to run the cables through and create a clean look.

5. assembly and finishing

  • Click in new kidneys and connect cables.
  • Reinstall the wheel house liner and tighten the screws. Your vehicle is now fully assembled! When the car is switched on, the new kidney grille initially remains blue and then changes to a clear white.

Conclusion

The LED kidney is a real eye-catcher and enhances your BMW optically. For a reasonable price of about €170–180 Tuning is an affordable investment that will give your 5 and 3 Series (they are also available for other models) a modern look. • Hi. No, you don't have to, if you don't mind the kidneys always being lit. Depending on the country (for example, here in Germany), however, it can cause problems, as it's not legal.
